Another Take on My Vintage Layout

Remember when I shared the layout I made as a tribute to my Aunt Vivian?  We made it at my Scrapbooking Your Heritage class at our library and it will be our February Scraps and Prayers project as well.  Today, I want to share another version that I made with it.  This layout is a tribute to my grandfather... my daddy's father.  He died when my father was only 12, so I only have a couple of photos of him.  Thus, I've used one of the photo mats to add my journaling.  It helps tell more of my story... my family history.

Tip:
My journaling is typed on vellum.  You cannot add adhesive behind vellum or it will show and it is NOT pretty.  Think of ways to attach it by layering objects over it, such as I did on the corners of my vellum piece.

A Desktop Calendar

The New Year has already hit such a fast pace that I haven't even shown you what we made at my January Scraps and Prayers class yet.  It was a pretty desktop calendar, thanks to my having a stash of leftover 'birch bark' papers from an old kit we had last Thanksgiving.  I loved this paper and just had to tuck some away for other projects.  Here's what we made.
The ribbons are all brand new except for the very top layer and that's a favorite that I kept in my 'stash' as well.  I do so many vintage projects that I knew I'd be wanting more of it.  The leaf sprig is from the retired framelits that went with our Secret Garden stamp set.  It's good for lots of projects, too.

The scripture is typed onto vellum CS and then attached by adding adhesive only to the end that is tucked behind the ribbons.  Adhesive shows behind vellum so you always need to plan a way to use it where you can hide it under another part of your project.

The case is still available if you need to order one.  It makes it handy to stand it up on display at your desk.

While you're here, let's take a look at what's up for February.  Classes are already filling up fast, so if you're interested in either or both of them, be sure to sign up ASAP.  Class size will be limited!!!

A Wonderful Gift to Display My Vintage Tags

My husband has a habit of asking me to mark things I like in catalogs we get in the mail.  He uses the ideas to shop throughout the year and save gifts for me for Christmas.  Yes, I know... wonderful.  He gave me something this year that I absolutely don't remember marking and so it was truly a surprise.  I love it and decided to use it to display some of my vintage tags.  It's a vintage looking wire wreath on a stand.  Now I can enjoy the vintage photos throughout the year.
I've been working like crazy lately on my Heritage Album for my dad's side of the family.  It is actually getting close to being finished!  I decided to get out a lot of our old vintage photos and enjoy them in a display.  Did I mention how very much I love old photos?

What are we going to do in class?

I hear this question a lot from my customers as I get ready to give sneak peeks at upcoming classes.  What are we going to do in class?  I like to hear this question because it shows they are interested and excited about what's up next.  I've had even more questions about my upcoming Project Life classes.  The next one will be on February 21.  Here's a brief overview of what we'll be doing.

- Learn what Project Life is all about and how it works.
- Compare various styles of scrapbooking and the best ways to use them.
- Create 6 page templates to use with your photos at home AND learn how to use them.
- Create 3 photo templates to use with your photos at home AND learn how to use them.
- Create several journaling cards, complete with simple and cute little embellishments.
- Create 1 complete layout (2 pages) using 12 x 12" Project Life pocket pages.
- Learn how to go on from here... what goes on the back of the pages...

We'll be using cards (and colors) from our Happiness Is Collection.
The class fee ($25.) includes all materials except your adhesive... and your photos, of course.

I hope this helps to get you excited about joining us for this class.  My class size will be limited to 6, so sign up early if you'd like to take this class.  If you are unable to attend but would like a kit, please pay to register by the class deadline, let me know that you need a kit, and I will prepare one for you.
Above, I've used some of my PL cards to create a fun banner.
Below, this is how I have organized my PL collections, with cards and accessory packs.
Below, this is how I label my PL boxes, to remind me what Washi Tape is in the accessory packs and what colors coordinate with all the cards.  This is the Happiness Is Collection.
We will be using these cards and colors at the Feb. 21 class.

In Praise of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, I'd like to post a recap from a previous post.  It's a story that I think bears repeating.  The best stories, after all, are told again and again.  I get goose bumps each time I read this and think about my experience of actually being able to hear Dr. King preach.

I know this post will date me... a lot... but I need to share it.  In honor of MLK today, I want to share a real experience I had as a very young girl... very, very, very young, of course.

My father was in a horrible car accident when I was about 5 years old.  He was a very successful salesman for an electrical equipment company and was on the road a lot.  (He always brought home presents for my sister and me.)  On one road trip, a truck driver was not driving well and my dad ended up being forced off the road and into a ditch... with a huge culvert in it.  His head went through the windshield, he was crushed into the steering wheel and no one thought he would live until help could come.  He was pinned against the steering wheel because of all the equipment in the back of his station wagon that had lurched forward in the crash.  A stranger stopped and stayed with him, talking calmly to comfort him until help could get there.  A part of the conversation was about being saved and truly knowing God.  My dad was a Christian and we went to church every Sunday, but this was a life-changing moment for him and he ended up being called by God to leave his successful job behind and go into the ministry.  He'd had to drop out of college (studying to be a doctor) because of lack of funds with only 1 1/2 years to go.  His father had died when he was 12 and his mother had 4 young children to support.  How amazing that he could get that far on his own.

So, back to the story, he enrolled at Millikin University to complete the rest of his undergrad work and our family started off on a new journey.  We lived in many small towns in Central Illinois while he completed his studies and worked at student appointments.  When it came time for him to enroll in Seminary, he applied to 4 or 5 Seminaries around the country.  He thought that he would take his family to a new part of the country for many new experiences we wouldn't otherwise have, based on where he was accepted.  He was accepted at ALL of them, so no help there with his decision.  After many prayers and discussions with my mother, they decided to pack up and move to the East Coast while he attended Drew Theological Seminary.

We lived in New York state for a year, northern New Jersey for 3 years and southern New Jersey for a year.  We loved it all!  In New York state, we explored as much of the area as we could and loved the beautiful mountains.  In the winter, our St. Bernard just walked over the fence because the snow was so deep.  In northern New Jersey, we lived in dairy farm country.  It was gorgeous and the people were beautiful.  I was able to pursue my music lessons (organ) with many talented teachers, most of whom donated their services (and all the music books I wanted) for free, in honor of my father's service to our church.  I still feel like a huge part of my heart is there.  We were just an hour away from New York City and a retired Metropolitan Opera singer gave my mother free voice lessons because she recognized what a beautiful voice she had when she sang in our church choir.  In southern New Jersey, we lived in Pleasantville (not at all like the movie) and were just 6 miles from Atlantic City.  I took organ lessons in Ocean City.  We went to the beach every day that we could.  I had never seen the ocean until we moved to New Jersey.

The year I graduated from high school, my sister graduated from junior high and my dad graduated from Drew Theological Seminary.  What a year!  After that, we packed up and came back to Illinois because he was technically still a member of the Central Illinois Conference (United Methodist Church) and because I was going to attend Millikin University.

So, what does all this have to do with MLK, you ask?  Well, it gives the background and setting for the story.  One day, my father decided to take us on a trip to New York City.  He wanted us to have the experience of attending Christ Methodist Church, a huge and beautiful church there.  I don't think he even knew ahead of time who would be speaking that day and he certainly did not know the pastor there.  He just thought it would be a fun trip.  As it turns out, their pastor was not speaking that day.  They had a guest preacher for the day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Can you believe it?  I actually got to hear him preach.  I was young, but I listened and I was captivated by his wonderful message.  He spoke of hope, faith, kindness, and living a life with God.  It was amazing.  I didn't realize then how famous he was to become or how his life would end way too soon.  I knew I was in the presence of greatness and goodness.  It left quite an impression on me.  I thank God that I had this opportunity and hope that we can continue to keep his words alive.  They are good ones.

Thanks for letting me share and I hope my story may have inspired you in some way.  God bless.

A Vintage Tribute in Sepia Tones

I included today's layout at the end of one of my previous posts on Heritage Scrapbooking, and today I'd like to take another look at it and talk about the elements in this layout.  I'm excited to say, too, that this is the layout we will be making at the Scrapbook Your Heritage class that I'm teaching at our Forsyth Library in January.   Everyone has liked it so much that we're going to make it at my February Scraps and Prayers class, as well.
This layout is a tribute to my Aunt Vivian, my mother's sister.  I'll later add journaling to include some special things I remember about her.
She was always so nice to me and could style my curly hair better than anyone ever has been able to do... and she did it all, basically, with just her fingers.  She had a beautiful, musical laugh.
The partial doily piece you see, along with the butterfly are both cut from our brushed gold CS.  I tried it just to see how it would look and I was blown away by how well it coordinates with the sepia tones in my layout.
Elements of a good vintage layout:
- sepia tones
- rich textures
- layers
- subtle layers of stamping, adding to the texture of the layout
--- Above all, the photos should be the star of each page.

How do YOU like to scrapbook? Putting it all together.

As we come to the end of my series on Styles of Scrapbooking, you've now seen it all.  You now have the tools to take it from here.  You may even want to try a little of each style.  If you do, you'll be able discover which style you like the best.  There's a time and a place for each style and however you do it, scrapbooking will help you relive each happy memory again and again.  It will preserve your memories and help you share them with future generations.

Let's take another look at all 10 popular styles of scrapbooking that I've been highlighting.  I'll share one example for each.  If you would like to see them all again, just keep scrolling backward until you've reviewed them all.
1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

shadowbox projects
6.

Scrapbooking your heritage:  Heritage Albums

Digital Heritage Scrapbooking
I'm sure I've probably forgotten something else here, but these are the methods I've used... so far.  What do I like the best?  I'm most often a traditional scrapbooker.  I think this is mostly because my generation likes to make albums to preserve and share our family history.  Do I like trying the other methods?  Yes, I do!  I think they all have their place.  I would not place vintage photos in a paper bag album, but I would enjoy making a paper bag album for a gift for someone or to showcase an event.  I LOVE making framed projects... vintage and more modern... but you can't put all your photos up on the wall or on a shelf, nor would you want to do so.  So, again, how do you decide?

Do what works for you.
Do what best preserves and showcases your memories.

Do what works best for what you're trying to preserve or share.  Try them all and you'll know what works best for you.  Do you need to buy supplies to try each and every style and method of scrapbooking?  Absolutely not!  Try different classes, where everything is supplied and prepared for you.  Then, you'll learn how to do each method and you'll know what works best for you.

However you choose to do it, the whole purpose of scrapbooking is to showcase and preserve your memories... to tell your story.  You'll end up with something to treasure for years to come.
